1. The Wicker Man (2006 and 1973)

The Wicker man

The Wicker Man is a thriller film about a police sergeant who is called to an island village to investigate a missing girl. While investigating the disappearance of the girl he finds that the locals refuse to help him at all and in fact deny even the existence of the child. Life on the island is very different than on the mainland, the community that live there are a strange cult that worship bees and try to mimic their social behaviour, any males on the island are workers and never talk. The police sergeant finds himself to be in a much more dangerous situation than he first thought. This film has historical references to the Gauls of ancient Britten with their wicker man ritual to bring prosperity to the community. This film draws you in to the different lifestyle that the goddess cult leads.  7/10

2. The Ninth Gate (1999)

the ninth gate

The Ninth Gate is an occult themed film staring Johnny Depp. It is about a man who becomes employed by a wealthy book collector to procure an authentic copy of The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows reputed to be written by the Devil himself. He finds this to be a much more dangerous task than he thought he was signing up for. What are of most interest in this book is the engravings in them that contain clues on how to open the nine gates to hell. This movie is thrilling and the occult content is pretty true to the real thing. We really enjoyed this movie. 8/10

3. The Witches of Eastwick  (1987)

the witches of eastwick movie

The Witches of Eastwick is a horror comedy starring Jack Nicholson as a wealthy new comer in town. Three women who have no partners anymore don’t know they are witches but are very good friends. Each of them become seduced by this wealthy man and he proves to have supernatural powers. The three women learn magick from him and are out casted by the Eastwick community, accused of being hors. There is some real magick in this film which we always love to see in cinema. There are some gruesome scenes and some really magickal ones too. We give it 8/10

4. Merlin  (1998)

Merlin tv movie cover

Merlin is the story of the wizard from the Arthurian legends. It brings the mythology to life really focusing on the magick in it. This was originally a television movie in two parts so it is rather long, not too long though, the story keeps you interested for the whole movie. The characters in the film are really good and it draws you into the world of ancient Britten. The general theme of the story is that Queen Mab, the queen of the fairies, wants the world to go back to the old ways; for the people to remember magick and the old gods. Merlin has accepted that the world has moved on and tries to stop Mab from meddling in the progress of the world. 7/10

5. The Gift (2000)

The Gift Movie cover

Starring Australia’s own Cate Blanchett, The Gift is the story of a physic lady living in the backwards of rural America.  After dealing with the local populaces marry woes and other problems she becomes involves with the police in a murder investigation as the investigating psychic.

It’s a fantastic movie, there are times that you feel so much empathy for the characters, and it’s wonderful to see the psychic gifts displayed in such a ‘real’ fashion. 8/10

Cheers
