The Magick Of Oils & The Oil Of Abramelin
We love to use oils in our magickal practice, as they are such a wonderful way to have the true plant spirit involved in your magickal work when they plant may be out of season, hard to find or even in another country. Magickal Oils have been used since very ancient times, they are symbols of the Gods Abundance, as to ancient peoples a good supply of Corn, wine and Oil showed that the Gods has smiled on them for the season. The oil is also a symbol of strength and fluidity and is a wonderful representation of these aspects during ritual.
There are three types of Oils that we are really concerned with as a magickal practitioners they are Ritual Oils, Anointing Oils and Condition Oils. Ritual oils are used for all sorts of purposes, you can use them to anoint furniture, ritual items, candles and many other magickally linked objects. When these oils are used on the body they become anointing oils, which are basically the same oils with a carrier oil added, such as unscented Olive Oil, Joba Joba Oil, Rose Hip Oil and many others. Condition Oils are magickal oils that have come from the Voodou Hoodoo community, and are used to either bring on a wanted condition i.e. Money, success etc or on the other hand condition oils have been known to alleviate other conditions such as illness, curses worked against you etc.
One of the oldest survive magickal oils that we have today is the Oil of Abramelin it first appears in the Torah, in Exodus 30:22-33), “?????????? ??????, ???-?????? ???????. ???????? ???-????, ?????????? ?????, ???-??????? ?????? ??????, ??????????-??????? ?????????? ?????????? ??????????; ???????-??????, ?????????? ??????????. ????????, ?????? ?????? ????????? ?????????; ???????? ?????, ????. ?????????? ?????, ?????? ????????-??????–????? ?????????, ???????? ??????; ?????? ????????-??????, ???????.” (Moreover the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: ‘Take thou also unto thee the chief spices, of flowing myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty, and of cassia five hundred, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil a hin.) It is used particularly in the rituals contained within the book, “The Sacred Magick of Abramelin the Mage” one of the key books in the Solomonic Grimoire tradition. Through the use of the tome “The Sacred Art Of Abramelin The Mage,” one can obtain the abilities to fly, to find ancient treasures and the power to cast off spells and curses, particularly those that regard the nature of love. We find that it is an amazing blessing oil also and it creates a fantastic unity between you and the divine. There are many recipes for Abramelin Oil ours is below, given as to make the same quantity as in the Torah:
6 kg of Prue Myrrh
6 Kg of Cassia
3 Kg of Cinnamon
3 Kg of Sweet Calamus
6 Litres of Olive Oil
We have never made the oil in such quantities however, simply adjust the ratios to suit how much oil you need to make.
However as this was to be made in the art of the perfumer, the ingredients would have had to have been macerated and then distilled which would have then made the resulting oil, which we can assure would smell much different than the oil made with the above ratios. We would suggest making the oil in the following way if you intend to you essential oils.
1 drop Cinnamon Oil
2 Drops Myrrh Oil
2 Drops Calamus Oil
2 Drops of Cassia Oil
14 Drops of Olive Oil
There is another version of the recipe for The Oil of Abramelin from Samuel Mathers, of Golden Dawn Fame. Many believe that his oil recipe is not genuine due to its use of Galangal Root, which was more than likely a mistranslation that came about, due to the work of the Early English translation completed by Steven Guth when he mistranslated the Calmus root to Galangal root from the early Germanic Manuscripts. In Mather’s translation and explanation of the Scared Magick of Abramelin the Mage he states, “You shall prepare the sacred oil in this manner: Take of myrrh in tears, one part; of fine cinnamon, two parts; of galangal half a part; and the half of the total weight of these drugs of the best oil olive. The which aromatics you shall mix together according unto the art of the apothecary, and shall make thereof a balsam, the which you shall keep in a glass vial which you shall put within the cupboard (formed by the interior) of the altar”
Oils offer us a valuable connection to realm of the divine, by exploring and making them it allows us to fully connect with our intent, our spirit, our guides and of course the plant spirit’s that are helping you.
Cheers
Brad & Saskia.
