The Archangel Gabriel

Because we are both practicing ceremonial magicians the archangels are an important part of our daily magickal practice and we value the relationship we build with them every day.

The elemental and directional correspondences of the archangels are supposed to be the same for everyone. As you probably know they have very specific correspondences for ceremonial magicians because we call them from the directions and the four directions correspond to the four elements. However there is some debate between magick practitioners here in Australia about these correspondences because the traditional directional ones originated in the Northern Hemisphere and us as Southern Hemisphere dwellers feel the directional and elemental correspondences need to be adjusted accordingly. There are also many people who associate certain directions with the different aspects of the elements which are different again. So it comes down to a personal choice on which angels represent which quarters of your circle. Many people see Gabriel as female, but of course it is your personal choice how to visualize the angels. We envision all the archangels as male, and so I will refer to Gabriel as “him.”

The Archangel Gabriel for us sits at the Eastern quarter and corresponds to the element of water. This seems appropriate for us because we live on the east coast of Australia and the ocean is east of us, which is the largest body of water. Gabriel governs over emotions and the moon. Gabriel’s stone is moonstone.

All the angels’ names end in “el” El means brightness or shining. Gabri means “governor” so Gabriel’s name means “governor of light.”

Lots of the mythology about Gabriel comes from the Book of Enoch, one of the Jewish scriptures. According to the book of Enoch the archangels Michael and Gabriel live in the seventh heaven and stand on the right and left-hand sides of God. However Gabriel rules Makon, the sixth heaven. Makon on the tree of life corresponds to Chesed. Chesed is the sphere of Divine Law and may be associated with the emanation of Mercy.

Things that Gabriel can help you with are doubt and fear. Many people are held back by doubts and fears about their own abilities. Gabriel can help people overcome these issues so that these things will no longer hold them back. Gabriel offers good guidance if you ask him for it. Consult Gabriel when faced with issues to do with your emotions; he will listen and give you valuable advice. If you are worried and are still looking for your true calling in life, ask Gabriel.

Gabriel is also the archangel of prophecy, if you want to keep informed about the future, Gabriel would be appropriate to ask. Gabriel will also give you messages in the form of dreams and visions.

You need to develop a relationship with the archangels in order to feel comfortable talking to them. The best way to start if you don’t do the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram is to do the relaxation ritual, which you can find instructions to in our Daily Rituals section in our Pagan lifestyle center. After you are fully relaxed invite Gabriel to come and communicate with you, have in your mind what you would like to talk to him about. Explain what it is you need Gabriel’s guidance for, once you have done this take a moment to see if you can feel Gabriel’s presence, if you can’t, ask the angel to make his presence known to you. Gabriel’s energy is almost like the ocean washing over you, it is a very peaceful felling. You may feel Gabriel’s presence in some other way, but once you know he is there thank him for his presence.

Leave your mind as receptive as possible to get your answers; they will most likely come to you as inspiring thoughts or maybe even images. Once you have got enough answers to your question thank Gabriel for his help. Stay seated/lying down for a few minutes just to think about what Gabriel has said to you.

This ritual is good to do for any of the angels when you feel you need to talk to them. It is also a good way to get to know the angels you would like to be in contact with at various times because once you get to know them they are easier to contact and you become more aware of their individual personalities and qualities.
